Forests are the Heart and Lungs of Cities
Cook County is largely flat and much of The Greater Chicago region was built on swamp land. As such, flooding is a major issue in most of Chicago.
Robust forest lands stretch across a good portion of the region, and encompass many of Cook County's water ways. What if these forests could perform as sponges for the region? Furthermore, how could revitalization of Chicago's former swamp land happen in many of these spaces? Is there a way to integrate these floodplains and waterways with program to teach the public about the importance of swamps and wetlands?
As a piece of marketing collateral, a study of Cook County and its forest preserves was performed. In addition a short mapping exercise and visioning session was performed. Below are the final materials for Busse Woods, which has an animal exhibit.
Our vision was to provide insights into opportunity spaces to expand wetlands near trails where programming and way finding could provide insights into the science of hydrology.
